This guide is to assist those who conduct workplace violence risk assessments. It is a reference guide, based on real life samples of exhibited behavior that can be used in determining the level of the potential risk. It then lists recommended responses in order to minimize and hopefully prevent an actual violent act.
It is not a set of clinical tests or forensically approved analysis. It is a practitioner’s guide – samples if you will – of what those in the trenches of dealing with potential violence on a day-to-day basis face and how they can respond. The objective of the assessor is to determine the violence risk potential of a subject towards a specific subject or set of subjects within a specific environment; this guideline does not go beyond that scope.
Just as it is important to understand that this instrument should not be viewed as an analytic instrument or tool, it is a methodical and reasoned investigative guide based on the experience of the author and the most current data available dealing with this issue. There is no “right” answer in determining risk potentials of violence – there are alternatives. Your job is to determine the most reasonable possible alternative or set of alternatives to resolve your specific set of circumstances in the least invasive manner possible that will not create a higher level of risk towards anyone in the specific environment where the potential violence may occur. This guide does not list all alternatives – it lists sample alternatives. It may be up to you to think outside-the-box if necessary to determine what is most reasonable for you and your organization.
You have a choice as to how you wish to order this product. It comes in a written format as well as an hour long CD. Both follow the same format and explain the same information, although the CD gives a bit more in-depth narration of the recommended alternatives to handle situations. Naturally I would recommend purchasing both items so that while reading the written format you gain additional insights and understanding from the CD. And with both items you will always have the document that you can refer to quickly and easily when considering a situation as well as the CD that you can listen to whenever you have a few extra moments such as driving in your vehicle.
